Chief Information Officer
I love thinking and talking about new ways of doing things, whether it is a small tweak to optimise a process or redesigning a service from scratch. In this section I will attempt to summarise my journey from a cleaner in a leisure centre to “Head of Business Change” for Medway Council, a large Unitary Authority in the South East of England. I am very proud to have worked for Medway Council since its formation on 1 April 1998 - and now find myself in a position where I am directly shaping how the Council will operate in the future. My experience in the leisure industry has been the perfect foundation for my career as I amassed a wide range of practical experiences in a front line service across a range of different business disciplines: • Customer Service - meeting customer needs and expectations has always been important to me • Business Planning – developing business and marketing plans to generate £4.3m income • Capital Projects – creating a vision, securing funding, and implementation • Quality Systems – implemented ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, CSE • ICT – responsible for the implementation and management of all ICT systems • HR – responsible for around 300 staff • Bar & Catering – running bars, cafes and catering outlets • Facilities – Leisure Centres, swimming pools, fitness facilities and golf courses • Contract Tendering – writing and reviewing tender submissions As the manager responsible for 7 large leisure facilities, serving around 2m visitors a year, I unfortunately had to deal with a few major incidents over the years including: fires, chemical incidents, accidents and fatalities. I even had to personally perform CPR Resuscitation during one incident. These experiences have given me a unique outlook to my current work as I have literally dealt with “life and death” situations – so I know I perform well under pressure. I have an MBA from the University of Greenwich Business School, which has given me the academic knowledge to compliment my practical experience. Continuing Professional Development is important to me so I have gained qualifications in Programme Management, IT Service Management, Education & Training, and Coaching. I was thrilled to be accepted as a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership & Management (FInstLM) in 2011, which I have maintained ever since. maiICT is a particular interest of mine so I am always looking for areas where transformation activities can be supported by technologies such as Business Process Automation, Bots, Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Services, Intelligent Automation, and Blockchain.
