A ransomware attack on a school district in Maryland, US, has halted classes for a reported 115,000 pupils.

Schools will remain closed today and tomorrow while teaching staff put in place plans for remote learning.

“Our focus today and for Monday and Tuesday is identifying and addressing student and staff device needs so that instruction can continue,” a Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) statement said.

BCPS said that BCPS-chromebooks are not affected, but is advising against the use of BCPS-issued windows-devices.

Local newspaper Baltimore Sun is reporting that the issue could take weeks to restore complete functionality to computer systems.

The attack is the latest instance of cyber criminals attacking public infrastructure in the US. In October, several government agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said they had credible information malicious cyber actors were targeting hospitals and health facilities with Trickbot malware.
