Former Australian captain, David Pocock has sent out a stark warning against the risks of greenwashing ahead of the Rugby World Cup which starts tomorrow in Paris.
TotalEnergies is among the tournament’s primary sponsors, but Pocock has suggested how the French fuel company may be trying to tap into the popularity surrounding the competition to improve its image.
As reported by the BBC, the former Wallaby captain turned politician, said: “You can’t sponsor us unless you have a legitimate decarbonisation plan, and you are transitioning your business.”
Hitting back, TotalEnergies denied any claims of greenwashing, stating that it was “wrong” paint their sponsorship in such a light.
The multinational also pledged to “invest nearly five billion euros in renewable and low carbon energies by 2023 and will therefore, for the first time, devote more investments to low-carbon energies than to new hydrocarbon projects.”
David Pocock is hugely admired and respected among the global sports community, and led his team through the last Rugby World Cup in 2019. A passionate activist, he is now an independent senator for Australian Central Territory, vociferous on climate change and a fierce campaigner for environmental, social, and anti-corruption issues.
In an interview with BBC Sport recently, he called the climate crisis “probably the biggest problem we face as a species.”
In response to Pocock, World Rugby chief executive, Alan Gilphin, said: “We recognise there is a challenging debate around them as a sponsor and as a fossil fuel company.”
